Jets' Maccagnan turns focus to offseason, free agents

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 2:54 p.m. ET

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan says the team would like to re-sign Pro Bowl defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, and adds that using the franchise tag on him or another scheduled free agent is ''absolutely'' a possibility.

In his first meeting with reporters since November, Maccagnan says Wilkerson is looking at about a six-month recovery from a broken leg. He says the injury will not affect the Jets' contract negotiations with Wilkerson.

The general manager says he was ''happy'' about the progress the team made under first-year coach Todd Bowles, but finishing 10-6 and missing the playoffs was ''disappointing.''

While touching on several topics, Maccagnan says the Jets would like quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick - another scheduled free agent - back, but ''we'll see how this plays out.''
