Jets have options at quarterback for 2017

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

In 2017, the New York Jets will again be looking to fill the quarterback position.  Will the Jets make a much-needed splash by bringing in a big named quarterback?

The 2016 New York Jets have been one of the most disappointing teams in the NFL.  Though not mathematically eliminated, the Jets have only 3 wins in their first 10 games and show no signs of being a team that can even compete for a win, much less a playoff appearance.

With this being said, the Jets management and fans will be looking at another busy offseason.  As always the quarterback position will be a point of emphasis, and there will be some pretty good quarterbacks to choose from. So who should the Jets look at?

The Jets will have money coming off the payroll, which should make the job of general manager Mike Maccagnan a bit easier in 2017.  The Jets will have the ability to be shoppers, which in recent years really wasn’t an option.  With this being the case, Kirk Cousins would be the free agent signing the Jets need to excite the fan base and possibly bring some long-awaited stability to the position.

In his five-year career as a quarterback for the Washington Redskins, Cousins has certainly had his ups and downs.  Overall the Redskins sport a 16-17 record with Cousins as their starter, which certainly isn’t overly impressive, but he has put up solid numbers.  He has completed 65.6% of his passes while accumulating 9,912 yards and 61 completed passes going for touchdowns. Also, current Redskins tight end Vernon Davis will be a free agent.  So it isn’t impossible to think Jets fans can be cheering for a Cousins to Davis touchdown pass in 2017.

Tony Romo is a very trendy name being thrown around as a possible candidate to fill the position of starting quarterback for the Jets.  Statistically speaking, Romo’s numbers speak for themselves.  Since 2006 Romo has completed 65.3% of his passes while racking up 34,154 yards and 247 touchdown passes.  Health is the biggest problem plaguing Romo over the past couple of seasons.

A back injury, while playing against the Seattle Seahawks during a preseason game once again took Romo off the field. Well, 10 weeks have gone by and Romo still has not taken a snap in 2016. The excellent play by rookie quarterback Dak Prescott has given the Dallas Cowboys and coaches no choice but to put him in the role of backup quarterback for the rest of 2016, Obviously, a lot could still happen, but Romo is certainly an option that would draw plenty of conversation.

The before mentioned Romo is certainly a quarterback that will attract lots of attention. It isn’t crazy to think that a team like the Denver Broncos may have an interest in bringing Romo in. Romo’s situation has already drawn some comparison to the situation Peyton Manning found himself in while leaving the Indianapolis Colts in 2012.

The Broncos defense is still strong enough to give them a shot to repeat as Super Bowl champions, but in the event, they don’t win the Super Bowl this year, they may want to bring somebody like Romo in, which would leave Trevor Siemian as a trade option for the Jets.

Siemian has shown amazing poise and decent decision making in his first season as starting quarterback for the Broncos.  The 23-year-old quarterback has won 7 of his first 9 starts while completing 60.1% of his passes.  He has also put up 2,028 yards and 12 touchdowns this season.  Obviously, the body of work isn’t extensive, and the Texans are feeling the wrath of giving a big contract to Brock Osweiler, but Siemian could be that young quarterback the Jets have been looking.

Of course, there are going to be numerous factors that will have to be played out before these types of moves can be made. But Siemian, Romo, and Cousins are all possibilities worth taking a look at.  Acquiring one of these quarterbacks would give amuch-neededd shot in the arm to a limp Jets fan base.
