Jason Garrett: Tony Romo has no structured practice plan for training camp

Published Jul. 29, 2015 10:52 p.m. ET

For the first time since the 2012 offseason, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was able to participate during the team's spring practices. In fact, he did not miss a single practice, and his young stable of wide receivers, running backs and tight ends had the opportunity to get valuable work in with Romo.

If you remember back to last offseason, Romo was on a very structured practice plan during training camp. He missed a lot of valuable reps, even though it didn't necessarily translate to the field. As the Cowboys get set to enter the grind that is known as training camp, there are no set restrictions on Romo's participation.

“As training camp goes on we’ll develop that plan based on how he’s feeling, how he’s handling the workload,” head coach Jason Garrett said, per the Dallas Morning News. “You’ll probably see him practice a lot. You’ll probably see him have some off days. There’s nothing structured at this point.”

Garrett explained further that the team will monitor him just like they do any other player on the roster. There won't be any special treatment for Romo during this training camp, because quite frankly, he doesn't need it.

“Yeah, just like with any player, we’ll monitor those guys day by day,” Garrett said. “Tony did a really good job this offseason, he practiced virtually in all of the OTAs — some days were more full than others — and we’ll just kind of watch him.”

In 2014, Romo set career highs in completion percentage (69.9) and total QBR (82.75). If he can repeat that level of play over the course of a full season, the Cowboys are a strong bet to repeat as NFC East champions.
