Running game fizzles in Jacksonville's loss to San Diego

Despite facing a San Diego Chargers' defense that entered the game 26th in NFL against the run, the Jacksonville Jaguars failed to generate much of a rushing attack in Sunday's 31-25 loss at EverBank Field.

Jaguars starting running back T.J. Yeldon carried the ball just nine times for 36 yards, while backup Denard Robinson had three carries for 23 yards. Instead, Jacksonville once again relied heavily on the pass, with quarterback Blake Bortles throwing 49 pass attempts.

Yeldon also failed to get a carry on any of Jacksonville's four trips into the red zone.

“The way the game was going, we were behind so I guess we were just throwing the ball,’’ Yeldon said, per the Florida Times-Union. “We had a run play (on one play) but he (Bortles) threw it as an option."

Bortles, confirmed Yeldon's take, saying the lack of opportunities for the running backs was dictated by the way the game played out.

“You go in with a game plan and you stick with what’s working and what’s going on," Bortles said. "We want to be a team that runs the ball and runs the ball successfully and well. We don’t ever want to abort the run, but you’ve got to get the ball downfield and move the chains. If the run is not working, sometimes, you’ve got to do other things.’’

The Jaguars weren't the only team that failed to generate any momentum on the ground. San Diego ran for just 79 total yards despite seven more carries than Jacksonville.
