How Much Have Tennessee Titans Improved?
The 2016 Titans are new and improved, but how much improvement have they actually had? That’s what we’re here to find out.
I warn you this article might bring up some bad memories, as we’ll look to the end of Mike Munchak’s years of mediocrity, to the clear mistake hiring of Ken Whisenhunt, to where we are today with Mike Mularkey.
More from Titan Sized
Mike Munchak was the Titans head coach in 2013, but was fired at the end of the season after the team finished 7-9. Ken Whisenhunt was hired the following offseason, finishing 2014 with a 2-14 record. After a 1-6 start to 2015, Whisenhunt was let go and Mularkey stepped in, leading the team to a 3-13 finish. This year under Mike Mularkey, the team sits at 5-5, and is in second place in the AFC South division. Let’s look at how this team stacks up against its former selves and see just how much improvement the Titans have made over the last few years.
RUSHING.
2013: 16 touchdowns, 1894 yards
2014: 6 touchdowns, 1447 yards
2015: 10 touchdowns, 1485 yards
2016: 11 touchdowns, 1460 yards
PASSING.
2013: 22 touchdowns, 16 interceptions
2014: 20 touchdowns, 16 interceptions
2015: 25 touchdowns, 17 interceptions
2016: 22 touchdowns, 8 interceptions
YARDS PER PLAY.
2013: 5.2
2014: 5.3
2015: 5.1
2016: 6.1
POINT DIFFERENTIAL.
2013: 362 for, 381 against (-19)
2014: 254 for, 438 against (-184)
2015: 299 for, 423 against (-124)
2016: 264 for, 251 against (+13)
RECORD.
2013: 7-9
2014: 2-14
2015: 3-13
2016: 5-5
As you can see, the numbers go down, down, down, up in most cases. One thing that really stood out to me is 2016 is the only year that Tennessee has outscored their opponents, so far. The rushing totals for 2016 will probably be very similar to 2013; maybe more yards, but less touchdowns. In every other category, the Titans today are better or on track to be better than they have been in previous years.
