Green Bay Packers big favorites over Minnesota Vikings in week 16

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 10:33 p.m. ET

Oddsmakers aren’t showing the Minnesota Vikings much love in their betting lines for the upcoming week 16 game on the road against the Green Bay Packers.

Earlier this season, you would have been silly to bet against the Minnesota Vikings. They were one of the most solid gambles around, frequently winning games and covering the spread. Betters were happy to lay their money down on the team.

Since then, a lot has changed. The 5-0 team that opened the season has lost 7 of their last 9 games and are coming off a humiliating blowout loss to the Indianapolis Colts at home in week 15 of the NFL season.

Now, with week 16 just around the corner, all eyes are shifting to the Vikings next game. With their backs firmly against the wall and chances of the postseason extremely slim, Minnesota will need to beat the Packers in Green Bay to keep hope alive.

Sadly, that doesn’t look to be something the oddsmakers deem to be likely. According to Oddsshark.com, the Minnesota Vikings are opening as 6.5 point underdogs to the Packers for their Christmas Eve game.

At first, that seems like a lot. But let’s break some of that down a little. Home field advantage is typically worth about 3 points when betting. Add in that the home field in question will be likely below freezing temperatures, and that advantage could be even better.

Not only that, but these are two teams trending in different directions. The Vikings have been in a downward spiral since their week 6 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, meanwhile the Green Bay Packers are riding a 4 game winning streak.

While there is still a chance of the postseason for the Minnesota Vikings, all the their hopes rest on defeating the Packers in week 16. Hopefully, the Vikings come ready to play against their NFC North foes on Saturday.
