KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Edinson Volquez gave the Blue Jays another reason to rue him.
The Royals right-hander combined with three relievers on a three-hitter, Salvador Perez hit a soaring home run off Toronto starter Marco Estrada, and Kansas City rolled to a 5-0 victory in Game 1 of their American League Championship Series.

Volquez ramped up his fastball to 97 mph to slice through a potent Blue Jays offense, never allowing a runner past second base over six innings. His only trouble occurred when he walked the first two batters in the sixth, but he wiggled out of it without any damage.
The Royals’ bullpen finished off the club’s eighth consecutive ALCS victory.
Alcides Escobar and Lorenzo Cain drove in runs off Estrada, while Eric Hosmer and Kendrys Morales tacked on two more off LaTroy Hawkins to put the game away.
CLEVELAND (AP) – Johnny Manziel promised he would win back the trust of the Browns and teammates with his actions following a rocky rookie season.
After making significant strides in his second year in the NFL, a recent incident could raise concerns about the popular quarterback again.
Manziel was questioned by police after witnesses saw him arguing on the side of a highway with his girlfriend and pulling her back into his car as she tried to exit the vehicle. Manziel admitted to police that he had consumed alcohol before the dispute.
The former Heisman Trophy winner, who spent 10 weeks in a rehab facility during the offseason, was parked in a gravel driveway Monday when Avon, Ohio, police spoke to him following an argument with girlfriend Colleen Crowley. Manziel wasn’t arrested and Crowley told police she didn’t want to press charges against him.
LAS VEGAS (AP) – Lamar Odom regained consciousness, and is communicating – speaking and even giving a thumbs up from his hospital bed – just days after being found in extremely critical condition at a Nevada brothel, loved ones said.
It’s the first significant update on Odom’s health since he was found unconscious and facedown at the Love Ranch in Crystal, Nevada, Tuesday afternoon.
Alvina Alston, publicist for JaNean Mercer, Odom’s maternal aunt and godmother, said that Odom spoke a greeting and gave a thumbs-up Friday morning, his first communication since being hospitalized in Las Vegas.
A person who is close to estranged wife Khloe Kardashian, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to release details of Odom’s condition to the press, also said that he was able to say hi to Kardashian.
NAPA, Calif. (AP) – Brendan Steele felt no different about his game Friday than when he tied the course record with a 63 in his opening round at the Frys.com Open. The difference was seven shots. What didn’t change was his position on the leaderboard.
Steele had to settle for pars on the closing three holes at Silverado that tend to produce birdies, giving him a 2-under 70 on a course that was getting firmer and featured much stronger pin positions.
All that mattered was a two-shot lead going into the weekend. He was at 11-under 133. He’ll take the two-shot margin over Will Wilcox (67), Jhonattan Vegas (71), Graham DeLaet (68) and Harold Varner III (70), who missed a 10-foot birdie putt on his final hole that would have put him in the final group on the weekend in his rookie debut.
Rory McIlroy shot 71 and was six shots behind.
DAILY FANTASY SPORTS
LAS VEGAS (AP) – As more states scrutinize the daily fantasy sports industry, the office of Nevada’s attorney general said it used DraftKings’ own words and online images as evidence the sites qualify as gambling.
A day after Nevada regulators ordered the sites out of the state unless they get a gambling license, a memo issued Friday cited a three-year-old online ”Ask Me Anything” interview on Reddit.com where the office of the state’s attorney general said DraftKings CEO Jason Robins compared his site to a casino and described the concept as a mashup between poker and fantasy sports. The memo also pointed to text attached to images on DraftKings’ website that used the word ”betting” to describe it.
DraftKings and others in the fantasy sports industry, including competitor FanDuel, have insisted their sites aren’t gambling and are legal under a 2006 federal law that exempted fantasy sports from an online gambling prohibition.
PITTSBURGH (AP) – The science surrounding how to diagnose and treat concussions is as complex as the injury itself.
No two concussions are alike. And while those heavily involved in dealing with them – from researchers to clinicians to scientists – know the road ahead will constantly evolve, this much appears to be certain: the days when doctors told concussion patients to sit in a dark room until their symptoms abate are over.
A two-day symposium of over three dozen experts came to a unanimous agreement that the options for treatment are wide-ranging and that inactivity is no longer the best – or only – option.
The symposium, underwritten by the NFL Foundation, focused on finding a starting point for putting together standard guidelines on everything from concussion protocol to active treatment options.
BERNE, Switzerland (AP) – The corruption scandal sweeping world soccer engulfed Germany as FIFA said it would investigate ”very serious allegations” that voters were bribed to win the 2006 World Cup bid.
The latest claims of wrongdoing linked to soccer’s governing body broke as suspended president Sepp Blatter went public with his fight to get his FIFA ethics case thrown out.
Blatter may have deepened the prospect of a long ban by admitting there was only a ”gentleman’s agreement” for the 2011 payment he authorized to UEFA President Michel Platini and which led to them both being suspended by FIFA last week after it emerged through a criminal investigation.
SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) – The president of South American soccer’s governing body said he supports Michel Platini to succeed Sepp Blatter as FIFA president despite an ongoing investigation involving two of the most powerful men in world soccer.
Blatter and Platini have become entangled in a Swiss criminal probe and were recently handed 90-day suspensions by FIFA’s ethics committee. The sanction practically ended Blatter’s 17-year rule as FIFA president and will likely hurt Platini’s chances of replacing him.
But CONMEBOL President Juan Angel Napout said he continues to stand behind the UEFA president even after Platini lost England’s support for his FIFA presidential bid Friday, signaling the first crack in the European unity behind the Frenchman.
