Drew Brees on Andrew Luck: 'I think he's a stud'

With the New Orleans Saints traveling to Lucas Oil Stadium for a showdown with the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, Drew Brees was afforded an opportunity to express his thoughts on fellow NFL quarterbacking colleague Andrew Luck.

It will be the first time the veteran Brees and still-young Luck will meet on an NFL field, but the two established a friendship during Pro Bowl festivities last season. And Brees clearly walked away impressed with Luck and showered him with compliments when discussing the fourth-year quarterback.

“I think he’s a stud,” Brees said of Luck, via ESPN. “He’s got obviously all of the physical tools and mental tools, intangibles that you need to play this position and play at a high level and play for a long time. He can make every throw. He’s a great athlete for his size and strength. He’s very poised no matter what the situation. And he’s won a lot of big games in the last few years. He’s got a really bright future ahead of him.”

Luck has been the target of some criticism this season after stumbling out of the gate before going down with a shoulder injury. In the four games he has played, the Colts have gone 1-3 while Luck posted a 57.1 percent completion percentage while throwing eight touchdowns and a disappointing seven interceptions.

But Luck seemed to rebound in a 34-27 loss to the New England Patriots. After sitting out two games, the Colts quarterback had his best game of the season, completing 30 of 50 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns. But most importantly, he didn’t throw an interception.

At 3-3, the Colts sit atop an awful AFC South and remain the favorite to win the division, especially if Luck can build on last week’s strong performance.

Brees understands all too well how a bad game or two can cause the critics to come out of the woodwork, as he has dealt with that this season as the Saints have struggled. But he also understands that all it takes is a good game or two to silence the naysayers.
