Broncos hire Dennis Allen as coordinator

Published Jan. 24, 2011 12:00 a.m. ET

The Denver Broncos and new head coach John Fox have hired New Orleans defensive backs coach Dennis Allen as their defensive coordinator, sources close to the situation have told FOXSports.com.

Allen reportedly interviewed with the Philadelphia Eagles for their defensive coordinator vacancy last week.

Allen began his NFL coaching career with Atlanta in 2002 assisting with the defensive backs. He then took over as defensive assistant/quality control, with emphasis on working with the defensive line. He joined the Saints as assistant defensive line coach in 2006 and was promoted to secondary coach in 2008.

The Broncos have employed a 3-4 defense in recent seasons, but it is unknown whether Fox will stay with that philosophy.
