Report: Tony Romo's availability to play now up to coaches

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will return to practice this week, but his availability to actually play in games will be left up to the coaching staff, reports ESPN.com's Ed Werder. 

According to the report, Romo thinks he has fully recovered from a back injury. Romo has been out since suffering a compression fracture in his back during the preseason.

In Romo's absence, rookie Dak Prescott was won seven of the team's eight games.

Prescott, a fourth round pick in this year's draft, is completing 67% percent of his passes with 12 touchdowns and two interceptions this season. His 104.2 quarterback rating is fifth in the NFL.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has indicated he doesn't know who will start once Romo is healthy.

"The key thing I want to emphasize is we probably are never going to have this totally sorted out," Jones said this week. "We're going to play it by ear, play it as it comes. To do it really right for the advantage of the team, which we deserve, [Romo's] got to really be ready to go at the top of his game."

It is not known if Romo will be in uniform for this week's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Romo, 36, has a base salary of $8.5 million this season and at least $54 million left on a contract he signed in 2013.
