Cowboys' top pick Byron Jones out with shoulder injury

Published Aug. 16, 2015 9:33 p.m. ET

OXNARD, Calif. (AP) Dallas cornerback Byron Jones, the team's first-round pick, will miss time with a left shoulder injury sustained in practice at training camp.

Jones collided with cornerback Morris Claiborne in a seven-on-seven drill Sunday and stayed down briefly favoring his shoulder. Medical personnel checked him for several minutes before the former Connecticut player left the field.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the rookie likely would miss a few days, but didn't believe it was a long-term injury.

The injury leaves Dallas temporarily thin at one of its deepest positions. Starters Orlando Scandrick (knee) and Brandon Carr (broken hand) aren't practicing, and Claiborne missed the preseason opener at San Diego coming off a left knee injury that sidelined him most of last season.
