Cowboys sign a quarterback prior to Thursday's preseason finale

With starter Dak Prescott sitting out the preseason finale Thursday night, the Dallas Cowboys needed to add a quarterback to back up Jameill Showers. The Cowboys did just that by signing Jerrod Johnson, according to Rob Phillips of DallasCowboys.com.

Johnson hasn’t played a regular-season game in his career after going undrafted in 2011. He was most recently a member of the Baltimore Ravens but was cut Monday and cleared waivers Tuesday.

In the preseason this year, he completed just two of eight passes for 19 yards and one interception. Johnson saw the most action in the 2012 preseason, when he threw for 236 yards in three games for the Steelers.

Of course, this is more of an emergency fallback option for Thursday’s preseason finale in the event that Showers gets injured. Not much can be expected from a player – let alone a quarterback – signed just hours before the game.

After showing interest in Austin Davis and hosting him for a workout, the Cowboys opted not to sign him. With Tony Romo out indefinitely, they’ll likely sign a more viable veteran after this weekend’s big cut day, but it’s clear Dallas wasn’t excited by the current market.
