Colts DE Robert Mathis: I'll be ready by September

Published Jun. 1, 2015 2:25 p.m. ET

Indianapolis Colts defensive end Robert Mathis reiterated Sunday he expects to be back on the field in September.

Mathis, who tore the Achilles tendon in his left foot last fall, told an Indianapolis television station he's standing by his recent prediction he'll be ready sooner, rather than later.

"I said it, I meant it," Mathis told WTHR.  "I'll be ready September."

Mathis suffered the injury while serving a four-game suspension for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy. His return would be welcome one for the Indianapolis defense. The five-time Pro Bowl recorded 19.5 sacks in 2013.

"I'm back running," Mathis said. "Training and rehab is full swing. I'm ahead of schedule and just trying to stay ahead of it,"

The Colts open the season September 13 on the road against the Buffalo Bills.
