Browns waive QB Caleb Hanie after one-week stint

Published Dec. 10, 2013 12:00 a.m. ET

The Browns waived quarterback Caleb Hanie, who backed up starter Jason Campbell on Sunday in New England.

Hanie was signed as a free agent last week when Campbell was recovering from a concussion and not a certainty to play. Hanie's release means quarterback Brandon Weeden may be ready to be cleared to return to practice after sustaining a concussion.

The Browns also signed running back Edwin Baker off Houston's practice squad. He could have a role this week against Chicago because starter Willis McGahee suffered a concussion in the fourth quarter against the Patriots and is following NFL protocol on head injuries.

A seventh-round draft choice by San Diego in 2012, Baker spent 15 weeks of his rookie season on the Chargers' practice squad. He spent 11 weeks this season with Denver and three with the Texans.

Cleveland also re-signed linebacker Justin Staples to the practice squad and released linebacker Jonathan Stewart.
