Panthers' Newton: 'Nobody has ever been who I'm trying to be'

Not many quarterbacks measure 6 feet 6 and weigh in at 260 pounds like the Carolina Panthers' Cam Newton. Addressing a reporter’s comment that he has been viewed as the league’s greatest talent and also as the greatest unknown, Newton shared this:

“I say this with the most humility, but I don’t think nobody has ever been who I’m trying to be,” he said, via WCCB in Charlotte. “Nobody has the size, nobody has the speed, nobody has the arm strength, nobody had the intangibles that I’ve had. I’m not saying that to say I’m a one-on-one type of person that this league will never see another. No, I’m not saying that. Hear me out. I’m just saying that so much of my talents have not been seen in one person.”

On paper, Newton is an anomaly compared to most other quarterbacks. He is massive in size and only 26 years old. Many pass rushers struggle to take him down.

However, the NFL has yet to witness a true breakout campaign from Newton.

Since the former No. 1 overall pick put up 4,700-plus total yards and 35 touchdowns as a rookie in 2011, his numbers have declined. He tallied just 3,666 total yards and 23 touchdowns last season. Newton also has a career 30-31-1 record as a starter.

Newton still could have plenty of solid years left in him. It would be great to see the quarterback take advantage of his stealth-like structure and amazing physical prowess. However, he’s nowhere near making those comments come true on the football field.
