Because of birdies, Couples can’t watch his birds at Super Bowl

You couldn't expect Fred Couples to tank just so he could go to the Super Bowll, could you?

Fred Couples found himself in a unique position on Friday at the Dubai Desert Classic.

Birdies on the last two holes guaranteed he would make the cut — and have to watch the Super Bowl from an airport instead of the 50-yard line.

Couples bought two Super Bowl tickets six months ago in hopes that his hometown team, the Seattle Seahawks, would make it to the big game.

Though his intuition proved correct, Couples, who doesn’t play frequently due to chronic back problems, will still be in the United Arab Emirates for the Dubai Desert Classic on Sunday.

While he joked to that he just didn’t have enough holes to butcher, Couples said that he needed to give his best on the course.

“There’s no way I would ever not try,” Couples said to “So I’ll watch it on TV, that’s the next best thing.”

Watching the game on television isn’t altogether a bad option, but the 3:30 a.m. start time in the UAE means Couples will probably be a little tired afterwards. Losing out on 50-yard line seats obviously isn’t ideal, but for Couples, having his favorite team competing for a championship will just have to suffice.
