Atlanta Falcons Re-Sign Ryan Schraeder to a 5-Year Deal

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Atlanta Falcons are bringing back starting right tackle Ryan Schraeder long-term with his new, well-deserved five-year contract extension.

As first reported by Kelsey from the Atlanta Falcons official website, the Falcons have extended the contract for their starting right tackle for the next five seasons. He’s now signed through the 2021 season and will be an asset on the line until then.

The Falcons now have Alex Mack, Jake Matthews, Andy Levitre and Schraeder under contract through the end of the 2018 season. All four of them have been assets this season along the offensive line and will continue to be for a good minute.

How does the money impact the cap?

We don’t have all of the details yet and likely won’t for a few days. However, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com has some of the details below:

Assuming that the Falcons got a lower cap hit in 2017 and 2018 based on the structure of the contract, they shouldn’t see more than around $7-8 million on the cap early on. The Falcons should have more than enough money to spend this offseason, but they were smart to go ahead and lock up the talented right tackle.

Was the signing a good value?

Ryan Schraeder is one of the best right tackles in the NFL. He’s excellent as a pass protector on the right side of the line and even better as a run blocker in the zone blocking scheme. Schraeder has looked at home over the past two seasons playing under Kyle Shanahan’s offense and could turn out to be a better player without the worry of the contract.

In personal projections for Schraeder’s contract this offseason, I was expecting him to earn somewhere in the $8-9 million range per year for his contract, and he only signed for $6.5 million per season. The Falcons got a steal with this re-signing.
