Atlanta Falcons' backup quarterback job wide open at this point

For T.J. Yates and Sean Renfree, it's been an all-out battle for the No. 2 quarterback spot behind Matt Ryan. Best of all, this competition may go on throughout the preseason, according to Vaughn McClure of ESPN.

As McClure explained, though, Yates may have ran Kyle Shanahan's offense before in Houston, but he didn't think he was entitled to the job. After Quinn said the job is "100 percent still a competition," Yates spoke about it.

"DQ's central theme of this program is competition," Yates told McClure after the game, referring to Quinn's message. "We are competing at every position every single day. I have to earn my spot on this team, like everybody else."

Renfree was actually better during Atlanta's opening preseason game, completing 6-of-7 passes for 68 yards, while Yates completed 9-of-15 passes for 105 yards and an interception. We still have three games left of evaluation though, so don't read too much into the numbers just yet.
