Alterraun Verner Records Interception Two Days After Father's Passing (Video)

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had an opportunity to upset the Seattle Seahawks, and cornerback Alterraun Verner was prepared to play a huge role in the effort.

On Friday, Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Alterraun Verner’s father passed away, but he always planned on suiting up to help his team take on the mighty Seattle Seahawks. Verner joins Torrey Smith, Brett Favre, and a host of other players to have a memorable performance in honor of a deceased family member.

Russell Wilson has been one of the best quarterbacks in the league this year (again) and he’s definitely been playing at an MVP level ever since he regained his mobility after struggling through an early-season injury. Wilson had no trouble carving up the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles, but the Buccaneers presented him with a new challenge.

Picking off Wilson isn’t rare, but it isn’t easy either. Verner deserves all the credit for this interceptions. Wilson decided to go with a risky throw on second-and-2, but Verner read the wide receiver’s route throughout the play. He made an excellent jump on the ball, soaking it up and picking up decent yardage after the pick amidst a crowd of Seahawks.

Verner recorded just one interception last season for the Bucs, and this is also just his first season of 2016. Here’s to hoping for many more from the former fourth-round pick, because Verner had five picks and a whopping 23 passes defended in his final season with the Tennessee Titans back in 2013.

It is always special to see a player coming up big in such an emotional game, and we hope Verner and his family are doing well during this difficult time. I’m glad Verner was able to bring many fans joy today, because even non-Bucs fans can appreciate this interception.
