SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers have signed offensive lineman Mike Person to a three-year contract extension.

Person was set to become an unrestricted free agent next week before signing the deal Monday to stay under contract with the 49ers through the 2021 season.

Person started 16 games at right guard last season despite dealing with various injuries. General manager John Lynch praised Person's toughness and the versatility he brings to the line with the ability to play center as well as guard.

The 30-year-old Person originally entered the league as a seventh-round pick by San Francisco in 2011. He didn't play at all as a rookie and then went on to spend time with Seattle, the Rams, Atlanta, Kansas City and Indianapolis before returning to the 49ers last season.
