Warriors sign Jose Calderon for two hours, pay him for the rest of the season
Just after the NBA trade deadline passes, veteran players on bad teams are often waived or bought out of their contracts so that they can join a contender for the playoffs. Even before these transactions are finalized, those players typically have a destination in mind and usually reach a verbal agreement to join their next team.
This was the case with Jose Calderon, who was toiling away in obscurity on a Lakers team that's just 19-42 on the season. The 35-year-old point guard had agreed to join the Warriors once he secured his release from L.A., but then Kevin Durant went down with a knee injury and Golden State's priorities changed.
The Warriors decided to use their final roster spot on small forward Matt Barnes instead, but in a move that showed a great deal of class, the franchise signed Calderon as promised -- and then waived him two hours later, while still paying him the full $415,000 he would have earned had he stayed on the team for the remainder of the season.
