Utah Jazz: Shelvin Mack Gets High School Jersey Retired

Utah Jazz point guard Shelvin Mack had his No. 10 jersey retired at Bryan Station High School in Lexington, Kentucky.

The Utah jazz will be in New Orleans on Wednesday for a showdown with Anthony Davis and the Pelicans. However, backup point guard Shelvin Mack made a stop in his hometown of Lexington, Kentucky the night before the game. He wasn’t just there for a quick taste of home to break up the current road trip either.

The Jazzman was back in the Bluegrass State to receive a major honor from the place where his basketball journey began — Bryan Station High School.

In a ceremony at halftime of Bryan Station’s game against Lafayette on Tuesday, the Mack Attack had his No. 10 high school jersey retired by the institution. Despite his status as an NBA player for one of the league’s up-and-coming teams, it was a humbling experience for the sixth-year pro.

“It still hasn’t hit me yet that my jersey is getting retired at Bryan Station,” Mack told the Lexington Herald-Leader before to the ceremony. “It’s a great accomplishment for me and I’m gonna continue to work and try to make everyone proud once they look up and see the Mack jersey.”

While his exploits in the Association and as a collegiate at Butler are well-known, Mack was a bona fide star at Bryan Station. As a senior during the 2007-08 season, he led the Defenders to a 30-3 record and averaged 22.6 points, 7.6 rebounds and 7.3 assists per contest. He was named to the Lexington All-City Team for his efforts.

More recently, he’s been the subject of social media grumbling and trade rumors in Utah. He addressed the latter on Tuesday, electing to stay positive —

“You just try to look at it with a positive outlook. The best thing about it is at least you know somebody wants you on their team. … It’s a business. It’s very rarely that you play for one team your whole career, so I’m just ready for the next chapter if it happens.”

Although the Jazz have had their issues at the backup point guard, Mack has largely been the team’s best option. In 71 games with the Jazz, he’s averaged 9.7 points and just under four assists and three rebounds per game. He continues to post a positive net rating as well.
