Who will get San Antonio’s final roster spot?
The San Antonio Spurs cut four players yesterday—Jimmer Fredette, Youssou Ndoye, Keifer Sykes and DeShaun Thomas—but still have three guys fighting over the 15th roster spot.
Who will get it? Here's San Antonio Express-News' Jeff McDonald with a closer look at all the options:
Between Butler, Williams and Simmons (or none of the above), San Antonio has a few solid options. The former two are three-point shooters while Simmons may provide a little scoring off the bench.
Either way, this decision isn't likely to alter San Antonio's fate in any way. It's still a very good team, regardless of who they keep for that last roster spot.
On the surface, it appears to be a two-man battle between small forwards Rasual Butler and Reggie Williams. Both players have performed well in limited action this preseason, at least relative to the task of making the end of an NBA bench. Butler, 36, has appeared in four games, averaging 3.8 points and shooting 37.5 percent. The 29-year-old Williams, who finished last season on the Spurs’ roster, has averaged four points in five preseason appearances. Could both make the team? It’s possible, but the Spurs would have to cut someone else. Rookie swingman Jonathon Simmons has a touching backstory, but has under-performed in his first NBA training camp. Coach Gregg Popovich attempted to help Simmons hack his way out of the weeds in Tuesday’s preseason loss to Phoenix by playing him for two long stints with the Spurs’ starters.
