Lakers: Nick Young Not Favored to Win Three-Point Contest

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 7:38 p.m. ET

Nick Young’s odds of winning the three-point contest at All-Star Weekend aren’t looking good, according to Bovada.

The NBA paid Lakers fans back for vetoing the Chris Paul trade earlier last month, kinda. It was announced that Nick Young would participate in the three-point contest at All-Star weekend, making him the first Laker since Michael Cooper to compete in the shooting contest.

According to the Las Vegas betting site Bovada, however, Young is better off staying home. His odds of winning the three-point contest are only 17-2, as good as Wesley Matthews’ odds and only better than Kemba Walker’s 19-2 odds.Of course, reigning champ Klay Thompson is the favorite to win, with 7-4 odds of winning.

Of course, reigning champ Klay Thompson is the favorite to win, with 7-4 odds of winning. His fellow Splash Brother and former three-point contest champion, Steph Curry, opted not to participate this year to get some much-needed rest, according to Anthony Slater of Mercury News.

“I’ve done it six times I think,” Curry said. “I told myself I was going to do it until I won. Then I won. Then I had to defend. And then Klay beat me. So it’s a little bit of an internal battle. But honestly, this All-Star weekend is the slowest schedule-wise I’ve had and I wanted to capitalize on that rest. So it was a tough decision. I love the spotlight being out there shooting, competing with the field, it’s so much fun — the lights, the atmosphere, just you and the rim — but I put a lot of equity into that contest and it’s time to kind of move on.”

Even with Curry out, Young will face some stiff competition. Not only will he have to do better than reigning champion Klay Thompson, but he will also have to hold off 2013 champion Kyrie Irving, who has participated three times already. C.J. McCollum and Kyle Lowry have also been part of the three-point contest at least once already.

Young and Eric Gordon are the only two newbies of the group, but Gordon’s odds (15-2) are still better than Young’s. Prove them wrong, Swaggy.
