DeMarcus Cousins picks up 19th technical, closes in on another suspension

DeMarcus Cousins is still acclimating to his new surroundings, but the All-Star big man hasn’t had any problems picking up technical fouls with the New Orleans Pelicans.

The temperamental center was called for his league-leading 19th technical Wednesday against the Miami Heat when he got tangled up with Willie Reed in the first quarter.

The incident looked pretty benign, but Cousins’ reputation likely played a part in the result. The latest technical leaves Cousins one away from picking up an automatic one-game suspension, which would be his third this season for accumulated technical fouls.

Cousins’ numbers have dipped since his midseason trade from the Kings. He came into Wednesday’s action averaging 20.9 points and shooting 42 percent from the floor and 28 percent from deep, each below his averages in Sacramento (27.8 ppg, 45% FG, 36% 3FG), and the Pelicans are 4-6 since the deal.
