Houston Rockets Player News: All Positions

News: Westbrook suffered a dislocated finger during Friday's game against the Heat, Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact: Westbrook was removed from the contest after suffering the injury, and it was later revealed that he dislocated a finger. The issue shouldn't impact his availability for Thursday's season opener against Miami, but he'll be considered questionable until the team clears him.
News: Westbrook will not return to Friday's game against the Heat due to a sore right hand, Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact: It does not sound like there is any reason for concern here, as the Rockets are likely just exercising caution with Westbrook given the nature of the game. The star guard accumulated 16 points (6-13 FG, 2-5 3PT, 2-6 FT) across 26 minutes prior to exiting. The Rockets' season tips off Thursday against the Bucks.
News: Rivers has been ruled out of Friday's game against the Heat due to neck soreness, Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact: Rivers appeared to be grabbing his shoulder on his way to the locker room, but he's since been ruled out with a sore neck. Considering the nature of the injury, he should good to go for Thursday's season opener.
News: Rivers went to the locker room with a shoulder injury during Friday's preseason game against the Heat, Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact: Rivers was spotted holding his shoulder on the way to the locker room, though the severity of the issue is unknown at this time. Shamorie Ponds and Ben McLemore could see minutes in Rivers' absence.
News: Chandler (rest) is no longer on the injury report for Friday's game against the Heat.
Impact: Chandler sat down for Wednesday's matchup, but he'll be ready to roll for the last exhibition of camp. He's averaged 4.5 points and three rebounds over two preseason contests.
News: Maker signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Rockets on Thursday, Alykhan Bijani of The Athletic reports.
Impact: Maker likely won't make Houston's final roster, leaving him to play in the G League with the team's affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
News: The Rockets converted Clemons' Exhibit 10 contract into a two-way contract Thursday, Tony Jones of The Athletic reports.
Impact: Clemons, who, out of Campbell, was one of the most explosive scorers in college basketball history, continued to impress during the NBA preseason. He parlayed that success into the two-way deal, and Clemons will be allowed to spend up to 45 days with the NBA team under this deal.
News: Spalding (calf) has been ruled out for Friday's preseason game against the Heat, Alykhan Bijani of The Athletic reports.
Impact: Spalding will sit for Friday's preseason finale as he continues to nurse a left calf strain. It remains to be seen whether he will be ready for the start of the regular season next week.
News: Blossomgame was waived by the Rockets on Thursday, Kelly Iko of The Athletic reports.
Impact: Blossomgame appeared in three preseason games for the Rockets, tallying 14 points, 23 rebounds, three assists and a steal in 29 minutes.
News: Harden exploded for 40 points (13-27 FG, 7-16 3Pt, 7-8 FT), 10 rebounds, and seven assists in 34 minutes during Wednesday's 128-114 loss to the Spurs.
Impact: Harden continues to put up incredible counting stats even though it's just the preseason. Those who drafted him within the first few picks of the first round despite the offseason acquisition of Russell Westbrook should be feeling awfully good about their decision.
News: Chandler won't play Wednesday against San Antonio, Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact: It's unknown at the moment why exactly Chandler won't play Wednesday but it's more than likely just rest. Chandler is expected back to the court against Miami on Friday.
News: House will start Wednesday's game against the Spurs, Tim MacMahon of ESPN reports.
Impact: Houston will experiment with bringing Eric Gordon off the bench Wednesday, so House will move into the lineup at the small forward spot. For now, it's unclear if the move is in any way permanent, but either way, House should be in line for more minutes in the absence of Gerald Green (foot), who's expected to miss several months, at minimum.
News: Gordon will come off the bench for Wednesday's game against the Spurs, Tim MacMahon of ESPN reports.
Impact: According to coach Mike D'Antoni, this is a way to keep at least two of his top three scorers -- Gordon, James Harden and Russell Westbrook -- on the floor at all times. Previously, the Rockets had started all three together, so it's unclear if this is simply a one-game trial, or if the strategy will carry over to the regular season. Danuel House will get the nod at small forward Wednesday.
News: Spalding has been ruled out for Wednesday's game against San Antonio due to a left calf strain, Alykhan Bijani of The Athletic reports.
Impact: Spalding was scooped up by the Rockets on Thursday, but he's already come down with an injury. He'll have one more chance to make his preseason debut Friday in Miami.
News: Frazier (ankle) is out for Wednesday's preseason game against the Spurs, Alykhan Bijani of The Athletic reports.
Impact: Frazier is set to miss another contest while nursing a right ankle sprain. He'll have one more opportunity to play in the preseason Friday against Miami.
News: Green's broken foot is worse than expected and the team is concerned he'll miss the entire 2019-20 season, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
Impact: It was initially thought that Green would be out for a few months due to a broken left foot, but Houston is now reporting that the guard is in danger of missing the entire year while on the mend. He'll likely need to undergo further testing before the team announces a concrete timetable for his return, but the internal fear is that he has a Lisfranc fracture. Danuel House, Ben McLemore, Gary Clark and Thabo Sefolosha will all be in the mix for extended playing time with Green out.
News: Green (foot) is believed to have suffered a broken left foot and is expected to miss "a few months," Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
Impact: Green was initially diagnosed with a sprain, but the injury is apparently worse than it initially appeared. The veteran will meet with specialists this week, but the current belief is that he could be sidelined until sometime after the new year.
News: Green is nursing a sprained left foot, Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact: Green was held out of practice Sunday, but the team has not stated how much time it expects the veteran wing to miss. For now, consider Green questionable for Wednesday's preseason game against the Spurs.
News: Spalding was claimed off waivers by the Rockets on Thursday, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
Impact: Spalding joined the Hawks on a partially-guaranteed deal in July but was let go early in camp to free up a roster spot for Jordan Sibert. Across 14 games with Dallas and Phoenix last season, Spalding posted averages of 3.9 points and 3.4 rebounds in 10.6 minutes.
News: Capela had 10 points (5-6 FG), seven rebounds and two blocks in Thursday's preseason win over Toronto.
Impact: The Rockets capped Capela at 20 minutes, but he was still able to hit five of his six field goal attempts, while adding an assist and a block. The big man did commit four personal fouls, however, and he failed to get to the free throw line.
News: Westbrook had 22 points (7-17 FG, 3-11 3PT, 5-7 FT), four assists, three rebounds and three steals in Thursday's preseason win over Toronto.
Impact: After missing the Rockets' first two exhibitions, Westbrook has played in back-to-back games starting alongside James Harden in the revamped Houston backcourt. As expected, Westbrook has remained productive in limited minutes, but he's hit just four of his 17 attempts from three-point range.
News: Harden had 22 points (6-16 FG, 1-8 3PT, 9-13 FT) and nine assists in Thursday's preseason win over Toronto.
Impact: Harden wasn't as efficient as he was earlier in the week, when he went for 34 points on 11-of-14 shooting, but the former MVP was still the driving force of the Rockets' offense. He tied for the team-high in scoring with Russell Westbrook, who also tallied 22 points, to go with four assists and three steals, in 25 minutes of action.
News: Sefolosha (rest) is listed as out on the Rockets' injury report for Thursday's exhibition game against the Raptors in Tokyo, Alykhan Bijani of The Athletic reports.
Impact: Sefolosha is just getting some maintenance after he played Tuesday in the first leg of the Rockets' NBA Japan Games series with the Raptors. The veteran forward played 15 minutes off the bench in the Raptors' 134-129 loss, finishing with 10 points (3-3 FG, 2-2 3Pt, 2-2 FT), two steals and one rebound.
News: House (leg) isn't listed on the Rockets' injury report ahead of Thursday's preseason game against the Raptors in Tokyo, Alykhan Bijani of The Athletic reports.
Impact: House played in the Rockets' exhibition opener Sept. 30 versus the Chinese Basketball Association's Shanghai Sharks but has missed the last two preseason contests after dealing with a laceration in his left leg that required stitches. With House apparently feeling comfortable again, he could step into a starting role on the wing Thursday, just as he did against the Sharks.
News: Westbrook scored 13 points (4-10 FG, 1-6 3PT, 4-5 FT) and handed out six assists in Tuesday's preseason game against the Raptors.
Impact: Westbrook sat out the Rockets' first two exhibitions, but he was in the starting lineup alongside James Harden on Tuesday, playing 21 minutes in the Rockets' 134-129 loss. While Westbrook appeared to be at 100 percent health, he struggled from beyond the arc and committed a game-high five turnovers.
News: Harden went for 34 points (11-14 FG, 4-7 3PT, 8-13 FT) and seven assists in Tuesday's preseason loss to the Raptors.
Impact: Harden was capped at 27 minutes, but that was all he needed to turn in a productive outing. The former MVP added a steal, a block and two rebounds to his ledger, while new backcourt mate Russell Westbrook finished with 13 points and six assists of his own.
News: Clemons tallied 15 points (5-14 FG, 3-11 3Pt, 2-2 FT), four rebounds, three assists, and two steals in 23 minutes during Friday's 109-96 preseason win over the Clippers.
Impact: Clemons dropped another nice performance Friday, scoring 15 points off the bench. After showing out during Summer League, Clemons continues to show off his ability to score the basketball. He remains behind a number of players in the projected lineup but has certainly outplayed a number of those thus far. There is no real fantasy value here but he certainly knows how to entertain the pundits.
News: McLemore ended with just nine points (3-5 FG, 3-5 3Pt), two rebounds, and one steal in 23 minutes during Friday's 109-96 preseason victory over the Clippers.
Impact: McLemore got the start with Danuel House (leg) on the sidelines but failed to produce anything of note. Despite signing a partially guaranteed deal with the Rockets, it appears very unlikely McLemore will be an every night part of the rotation and he has little to no fantasy value, even in the deepest of formats.
News: Capela amassed 14 points (4-9 FG, 6-10 3Pt), 11 rebounds, two assists, and one block in 27 minutes during Friday's 109-96 preseason win over the Clippers.
Impact: Capela put up his second straight double-double, ending with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Despite the addition of Russell Westbrook, Capela could be looking at yet another career year. He has been falling in drafts with the expectation his rebound numbers take a hit. While this could be the case, he is likely to see a bucket load of open looks at the rim, resulting in a possible increase in both points and efficiency.
News: Harden finished with 37 points (8-22 FG, 4-14 3Pt, 17-20 FT), seven rebounds, seven assists, and two steals in 28 minutes during Friday's 109-96 preseason victory over the Clippers.
Impact: Harden continued his strong preseason form, torching the Clippers with a game-high 37 points. He got to the free-throw line 20 times, also jacking up 14 three-point attempts. He has certainly hit the ground running and appears locked in on putting up another MVP caliber season. Russell Westbrook is yet to join him on the floor, however, based on what we have seen from Harden, it's going to be a fun ride this season.
News: House (leg) will not play Thursday against the Clippers, Duane Rankin of The Arizona Republic reports.
Impact: House needed three stitches after opening up a cut on his leg during Wednesday's practice. While the forward won't be available for Houston's showdown with the Clippers in Hawaii, he should be good to go when the team travels to Tokyo next week.
News: Bennett will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact: It's unclear how long the procedure will keep Bennett sidelined, but it sounds like it will prevent the former first overall pick from earning a spot on the roster for the start of the season.
News: Westbrook (knee) is expected to make his preseason debut on Oct. 8 against Toronto in Japan, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
Impact: The Rockets are simply being cautious with Westbrook, who underwent a minor procedure over the offseason. He'll sit out Monday night's exhibition matchup with the Shanghai Sharks, as well as an Oct. 4 meeting against the Clippers, before debuting in a Rockets uniform on Oct. 8 in Japan.
News: Westbrook (knee) won't play in Monday's exhibition opener against the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association, Tim MacMahon of ESPN.com reports.
Impact: Westbrook hasn't reported any setbacks in his recovery from the arthroscopic right knee surgery he underwent last spring, but since he was only recently cleared for live 5-on-5 drills, the Rockets will err on the side of caution and hold him out for their first preseason contest. The Rockets will surely want to see how the dynamic between Westbrook and James Harden functions before the regular season gets underway, so expect the eight-time All-Star to get some run at some point later in Houston's preseason schedule.
News: Westbrook "might not play" in Monday's preseason matchup against the Shanghai Sharks, Alykhan Bijani of The Athletic reports.
Impact: If Westbrook is held out, it'll likely be on a precautionary basis, though the veteran guard did undergo a minor knee procedure back in May. Regardless, Westbrook is expected to be at full strength for the start of the regular season on Oct. 24, and coach Mike D'Antoni noted that Westbrook went through a full scrimmage Saturday night, and he'll do the same Sunday. "He's doing well," D'Antoni said. "They're amping him up. It's a little bit of a process but he was good [Saturday night]."
News: Gordon, according to coach Mike D'Antoni, "is the starter [right now] and he should be," Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact: Gordon inked a three-year, $54.5 million extension at the end of August, signaling the franchise's commitment to him as a key piece for the near future. He's started 98 of his 212 appearances for Houston across the past three seasons, launching 8.8 three-point attempts per game. While a starting lineup consisting of Russell Westbrook, Harden, and Gordon is quite undersized, the floor spacing that Gordon can provide is crucial to the makeup of the team.
News: Blossomgame signed a contract with the Rockets on Friday.
Impact: The former Clemson standout will have a tough time making the Rockets' final 15-man roster after training camp concludes. A more realistic outcome is that he lands a deal with team's G League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
News: Nene re-injured his chronic adductor issue and won't be able to take part in the Rockets' training camp, Mark Berman of Fox 26 Houston reports.
Impact: The 37-year-old isn't expected to have a large role this coming season and this preseason injury seems like it could roll into the regular season. If that happens, Houston will likely look to players like Isaiah Hartenstein and Gary Clark for end-of-the bench minutes at center.
News: Tucker (ankle) worked out in New York this week and appears to have moved past the ankle injury that kept him away from Team USA, Alykhan Bijani of The Athletic reports.
Impact: Tucker pulled out of Team USA camp prior to the FIBA World Cup due to an ankle issue, but with a few weeks to recover, the forward appears to be back to full strength. Expect Tucker to play his usual role this season as the Rockets' most versatile defender, who can also be a threat to hit corner threes.
News: Anderson has agreed to a partially-guaranteed contract with the Rockets, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
Impact: Anderson played 25 contests last season between the Heat and the Suns, seeing just 12.9 minutes per game. He played for the Rockets during the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons, averaging 11.6 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.4 threes across 27.8 minutes. It's not immediately clear what sort of guarantees are on Anderson's contract, but it doesn't seem likely that he'll see a significant role with Houston, assuming he's on the final roster.
News: Sefolosha signed a one-year, minimum contract with the Rockets on Friday, Mark Stein of The New York Times reports.
Impact: Sefolosha has been one of several free agents working out at the Rockets minicamp in Las Vegas and has turned that into a contract offer. Sefolosha not only has a history of playing with James Harden and Russell Westbrook in Oklahoma City, but he should also be a good fit schematically in Houston. While he is 35 years old, Sefolosha still shot 43.6 percent from three with the Jazz last season and can be a versatile defender. He'll provide quality veteran depth to the Rockets' frontcourt this season.
News: Brown and the Trail Blazers came to terms Monday on a training camp contract, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports.
Impact: Undrafted out of UCLA, Brown will latch on with a Trail Blazers team hurting for depth at the center spot with Jusuf Nurkic (leg) injured. Portland brought in Hassan Whiteside over the summer, but it also parted ways with Meyers Leonard, so there's an outside chance Brown could be kept around as an emergency option at the five. The 7-1 Brown averaged 9.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.9 blocks in 32 games at UCLA last season.
News: Gordon signed a three-year, $54.5 million contract extension with the Rockets on Friday, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
Impact: Gordon has been a valuable piece to the Rockets' puzzle the past three years while working as a second-unit scorer and occasional sidekick alongside James Harden in the starting five. The extension will keep him in the fold through the 2022-23 campaign, but his outlook may be more muddled moving forward with the offseason addition of Russell Westbrook. With Westbrook and Harden likely to absorb most of the minutes at two backcourt spots, Gordon could end up seeing a good portion of his playing time at small forward during the upcoming campaign. While that not ideal for defensive purposes, Gordon should continue to garner plenty of open looks from distance when playing alongside either or both of Harden and Westbrook.
News: Tucker suffered an ankle injury and withdrew from USA Basketball on Friday, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
Impact: It's unclear whether or not Tucker's injury is a serious one or not, but the veteran sees no reason to continue on with USA Basketball and risk further damage. Tucker will now have his sights set on being healthy for the start of Rockets training camp.
News: Chiozza was waived by the Rockets on Tuesday, Alykhan Bijani of The Athletic reports.
Impact: Chiozza spent most of his time in the G League last season, but appeared in seven games with the Rockets, totaling six points, four assists, four rebounds, one steal and one block in 33 minutes. He played in the 2019 summer league with Houston as well, but he didn't impress enough to earn a final roster spot.
News: Davis was waived by the Rockets on Tuesday, Alykhan Bijani of The Athletic reports.
Impact: Davis was claimed off waivers by Houston in mid-June after being waived by Atlanta. It seems the Rockets have confidence in their center depth with Clint Capela, Tyson Chandler and Isaiah Hartenstein.
News: Westbrook (finger/knee) said Friday that he'll be ready for training camp, Alykhan Bijani of The Athletic reports.
Impact: Westbrook underwent surgery on both his finger and knee in early May, but neither were serious. He'll open training camp on a new team for the first time since drafted by the Thunder, and Westbrook will hope to gain chemistry early on with James Harden.
News: McLemore signed a partially guaranteed two-year contract with the Rockets on Tuesday, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
Impact: It has been a tough few years for McLemore since the former Kansas standout was a lottery pick back, and he played in just 19 games over the course of the 2018-19 season. However, while it was in limited action, McLemore did shoot 41.5 percent with Sacramento last season, which was by far the highest mark of his career. Under a partially guaranteed deal, he will most likely have to earn his way onto the Rockets' final roster during training camp and preseason.
