Reed Sorenson's Daytona 500 hopes take a hit in scary Duel crash

Published Feb. 23, 2017 9:07 p.m. ET

Thursday night’s first Can-Am Duel Daytona 500 qualifying race saw calamity in the closing stages, at Reed Sorenson went head on into the wall in a hard crash on Lap 47 of 60.

Coming into the tri-oval on the frontstretch, Corey LaJoie closed on Sorenson’s rear and may have made contact with him. Sorenson, in turn, collected Paul Menard in the incident, causing heavy damage on the No. 27 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet.

Kyle Busch also suffered damage in the incident, as his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota appeared to hit the outside wall.

Under NASCAR’s new rules, Sorenson’s car was too heavily damaged to continue and he will not qualify for the Daytona 500.
