Martin Truex Jr. was fastest in Friday’s lone NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
Truex turned his fastest lap at 133.562 miles per hour. He was followed on the speed chart by Carl Edwards (133.380 mph), defending race winner Kyle Busch (133.100 mph), Kurt Busch (133.091 mph) and Denny Hamlin (132.956 mph).
Alex Bowman, who will be the substitue driver for Dale Earnhardt Jr. in Sunday’s New Hampshire 301, was 13th-fastest (132.172 mph). Bowman also had the third-fastest speed posted when it came to 10-consecutive-lap averages at 127.591 mph in the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet usually driven by Earnhardt.

Hendrick Motorsports announced on Thursday that Earnhardt was sitting out this weekend’s race after experiencing "concussion-like" symptoms. The organization also announced that if Earnhardt is unable to return behind the wheel by next Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Jeff Gordon would take Earnhardt’s place.
For now, though, Bowman is the man piloting the No. 88. And in Friday’s practice, the only drivers to post faster times over 10 consecutive laps were Tony Stewart (128.642 mph) and Edwards (129.051 mph).
