Wingo, 50, most recently worked with NASCAR Sprint Cup driver David Ragan at Roush Fenway Racing until late last month. Prior to his assignment with the No. 6 Ford, the Spartanburg, S.C.-native worked with Cup drivers Jamie McMurray, Casey Mears and Juan Pablo Montoya.
“It’s definitely going to be a challenging position,” Wingo said. “(The Wood Brothers) have had their struggles of late but I’ve always thought a lot of (them) and I really look forward to getting started.”
The Wood Brothers team has been in operation since 1953 and has enjoyed a relationship with Ford Motor Co. for 57 years. The heralded organization has posted 97 wins and 118 poles in Sprint Cup competition.
The team has run a limited schedule the last two seasons and will finish the year with the races at Charlotte, Texas and Homestead.
“We’re really looking forward to going to Charlotte next weekend with Donnie,” team owner Eddie Wood said. “Our team has had a lot of success there over the years with a variety of drivers and we’re excited to start the next chapter.”
