Kevin Harvick and his No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing team: 'We believe'

Kevin Harvick, his crew chief Rodney Childers and the entire No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing team have a very simple mantra: “We believe we will win.”

Say anything often enough and you’ll get buy-in eventually.

Harvick and his crew certainly believe it.

And with good reason.

While plenty of people in racing talk the talk, when the pressure is on, the No. 4 team walks the walk, over and over and over again.

Two years ago, right here at Phoenix International Raceway, Harvick had to win or face elimination from the Chase.

He won.

And the following week he won at Homestead-Miami Speedway to take the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship he’d sought for so long.

Last year, Harvick faced elimination if he didn’t win the Chase race at Dover.

He won again.

This weekend, Harvick needs to win at PIR or get knocked out of the Chase on Sunday.

Given that he’s won eight times here, including five of the last six, his odds look awfully good, although Harvick isn’t treating it like a slam dunk by any means.

“Anything can happen and we just have to control the things that we can control and try and put ourselves in position to where we usually do and see where it all falls,” said Harvick, who qualified sixth for Sunday’s Can-Am 500.

And he’s definitely pumped up about it.

“That is what makes all this here exciting and really what I like about it is the sense of the unknown, the competition, the effort, and the thought and everything that goes into that is intriguing for me,” said Harvick.

“From a team standpoint to see where everybody is at and how they approach it is fun to me and I like to see people performing and working at that level. Because once they do it, you can hold them to it.”

That’s a big reason a lot of people believe Harvick will win on Sunday: Because he believes and the team believes they will win. And they know exactly how to turn belief into results -- and in this or any other professional sport, that’s magic.
