Kanaan, 35, and his Andretti Autosport team had one victory to their credit this season, in the Iowa Corn Indy 250 at Iowa Speedway.
The IndyCar Series has enjoyed some tight contests and exciting finishes this season, but it had been dominated by Will Power and Dario Franchitti. Power (pictured) and his Team Penske group stayed close, but in the end Franchitti secured his second championship in a row. Here’s a look at the men who have hoisted the trophy in the IndyCar Series this season:
Will Power, five wins
Power, 29, and his Penske team were the class of the field in the opening half of the season, and remained competitive to the end. Power has victories in the Sao Paulo Indy 300 on the streets of Brazil; The Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on the streets of Florida; the Camping World Grand Prix at The Glen at Watkins Glen International; The Honda Indy Toronto on the streets of Toronto, Ontario; and the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma at Infineon Raceway.
Dario Franchitti, three wins, 2010 championship
Franchitti, 37, put his Ganassi team in the title race with his victory in the prestigious Indianapolis 500. Winning on the series’ most prominent stage showed the team was not only competitive, but seems to have motivated it to new heights. Since then, Franchitti won the Honda 200 on the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington; and the Peak Antifreeze and Motor Oil Indy 300 at Chicagoland Speedway. His finish at Homestead locked up his second championship in a row.
Helio Castroneves, three wins
Castroneves, 30, enjoyed a trio of wins, including back-to-back victories. Castroneves won the Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham and then again in the Kentucky Indy 300 at Kentucky Speedway. He followed that victory with the ensuing win in the Indy Japan 300 at the Twin Ring Motegi.
Scott Dixon, three wins
Dixon, 20, has been a strong performer with his Ganassi team. Dixon has notched a pair of victories this season, with those coming in the Road Runner Turbo Indy 300 at Kansas Speedway, the Honda Indy Edmonton at the City Centre Airport, and the Cafes do Brasil Indy 300.
Ryan Briscoe, one win
Briscoe, 28, and his Penske Racing team had a win to their credit. Briscoe earned his victory in the Firestone 550k at Texas Motor Speedway.
Ryan Hunter-Reay, one win
Hunter-Reay, 29, and his Andretti Autosport team earned his win this season in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, on the streets of California.
