One-off return in Monaco is a 'dream,' says Button

Jenson Button says that his return to McLaren for the Monaco GP is a “dream” - but he’s made it clear that he sees it as a one-off.

Many observers, including other retired drivers such as Mark Webber, have suggested that Button’s heart is not in it.

“Of course when the chance came to race in Monaco I was going to take it,” he told Sky F1 on Monday. “I don't want to be racing in F1 for a whole season, because I've done my time in F1. I've loved most of my career, but it was time for me to have a break. But to come back for the Monaco GP, I mean that is just the dream.”

Asked what he was thinking when the season started without him he said: “I watched the highlights of the race in Australia, and I loved watching two teams fight at the front in F1. So I’m sure a lot more people are turning on the TV and actually waking up for it when it’s on the other side of the world.”

Button says he’s enjoying his new life, which is based largely in California.

“I definitely stepped away from F1 at the right time. I’m just so enjoying being in the same place for days and weeks, and having – I’m not going to say normal life, because what is a normal life? But I do pretty much the same things every day, apart from the training.

“And it’s so lovely. I love cooking. I’ve got two dogs, and I can’t imagine having children right now, because dogs are such hard work. It’s non-stop!”
