Two individuals lost their lives in a crash Friday during the Targa Florio in Sicily.

The incident occurred when the No. 29 Mini Cooper JCW ran off course and struck a marshal. The marshal - 56-year-old Giuseppe Laganà - and the driver - 53-year-old Mauro Amendolia - were both killed in the incident. The driver’s daughter - 27-year-old Gemma Amendolia - was the navigator in the passenger seat. While Gemma survived, she was taken to hospital in serious condition with a head injury.

Gemma was initially meant to race with her sister Valentina but - according to Italian reports - her more-experienced father took Valentina's place due to the course conditions.

The incident is being investigated. It took place on a straight piece of road, and there is a possibility that sleet on the road surface may have contributed to the crash.
