Swiss striker Blaise Nkufo announces retirement

Swiss striker Blaise Nkufo has announced his retirement after 17

professional seasons, his last with the Seattle Sounders FC of the

MLS.

The Sounders announced Monday that Nkufo decided to step away

after the team and the forward cut ties at the start of this

season.

Nkufo, 35, joined Seattle following the 2010 World Cup, where he

played for Switzerland. In 11 MLS matches, Nkufo scored five goals.

Before joining the Sounders, Nkufo played seven seasons for FC

Twente in the Netherlands, where he scored a club-record 114 goals

in league play.

Nkufo, whose family lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, says

he plans to stay in North America and find opportunities to help at

the youth level.
