Lit up in MLB debut Szapucki made his MLB debut out of the bullpen in Wednesday's 20-2 loss to Atlanta, giving up six runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out four over 3.2 innings.

Impact New York was already trailing by eight runs when Szapucki was summoned from the bullpen in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the 25-year-old did little to clot the bleeding. Szapucki threw only 42 of his 82 pitches for strikes, and he was hit hard when he found the zone, giving up two home runs and two doubles. The Mets could have an opening in the rotation Monday against Milwaukee after Wednesday's starter, David Peterson, exited early with side soreness, but Szapucki may have disqualified himself from spot-start consideration after his ugly showing in Atlanta.

Recalled by Mets The Mets recalled Szapucki from Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.

Impact One of the organization's higher-ranked pitching prospects, Szapucki has a 4.41 ERA through 34.2 innings at Triple-A this season after allowing at least three runs in three consecutive outings. The lefty is built up to start games, so he'll likely fill the fifth spot in the Mets rotation, which had been occupied by Jerad Eickhoff, until Marcus Stroman (bereavement) is ready to return.

Impact Szapucki was making his second start for Syracuse since being returned from the minors after he had served as the Mets' 27th man for the team's May 27 doubleheader with the Rockies. The Mets ultimately didn't need him to provide length out of the bullpen, but the 24-year-old lefty may not have to wait much longer before making his big-league debut. Due to doubleheaders June 19 (in Washington) and June 21 (versus Atlanta), the Mets will soon need to add sixth and seventh starters to the mix on a temporary basis, and Szapucki would appear to be a strong candidate to fill one of the openings.

Recalled for doubleheader Szapucki was recalled by the Mets to serve as the 27th man in Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader against the Rockies, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

Impact Szapucki began the 2021 campaign with Triple-A Syracuse and has recorded a 2.77 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in 13 innings across three appearances (two starts). He'll be available to make his major-league debut out of the bullpen during Thursday's nightcap but will likely head back to the minors following the twin bill.
