Over the weekend, two clubs did their part to help the healing from two recent tragedies — the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., and the fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas.
Sunday was ”Newtown Day at Yankee Stadium.” About 4,000 residents of the town took advantage of free tickets and food vouchers for the Yankees-Orioles game. The national anthem was performed by the Newtown Youth Voices.
On Saturday night before their game against the Astros, the Rangers presented officials from West with a $140,000 donation put together by a combination of Major League Baseball, the players association and the Rangers foundation.
The Rangers wore patches for Saturday’s game that read, “Support West.” Texas first baseman Lance Berkman took that message quite literally: he gave the West fire department a firetruck.
