Will any Non-Roster Invitees provide the LA Angels with outfield depth

The LA Angels now have a plethora of outfielders with the signings of Ben Revere & Cameron Maybin to go along with Mike Trout & Kole Calhoun.  Jefry Marte is also in that mix. However, the Angels have 4 non-roster invitees who are trying to make the club.  What are their chances to make the roster? Let’s take a look.

The LA Angels non-roster invitees include Ramon Flores, Michael Hermosillo, Shane Robinson, and Eric Young Jr. I’m going to focus on three of these players who I think have the best chance to crack the Major League Roster.

Michael Hermosillo – OF – Michael Hermosillo is a player many Angel fans have never heard of, but probably will in the future.  Hermosillo has been moving his way of the ranks in the Angels minor league system over the past couple of years.  Hermosillio is a right-handed hitting outfielder, who in Single-A last season hit .317 in 77 games with six homers and 39 RBI’s and also stole 10 bases. Hermosillo also .402 on-base-percentage last season.

Hermosillo showed a lot of promise last season, so much so that he was invited to the Arizona Fall League where he joined the likes of Taylor Ward, Eduardo Paredes, Justin Anderson, David Fletcher, and Grayson Long on the Scorrsdale Scorpions.  Hermosillo hit .267 with two RBI’s in nine games and sported a .353 OBP.

Hermosillo will probably not make the Angels roster this year, but there is an outside chance that he could be called up before seasons end.  However, he is someone to keep an eye on in the future.

Shane Robinson – OF – Shane Robinson is a name most Angels fans should know as he played in 65 games for the Angels in 2016.  Robinson proved that he was a above average defense with good speed, unfortunately as a hitter he left a lot to be desired.

Robinson hit .173 for the season in 98 at-bats hitting one homer and driving in 10 runs for the Angels in 2016.  He also stole three bases and he had a paltry .257 OBP.  Robinson could be a good fit on the Angels as an utility outfielder. Robinson could also be a late-inning defensive replacement or pinch-runner.

However, Robinson needs to improve on his hitting in order to earn a roster spot on the Angels.  He is a career .228 hitter with six homers and 63 RBI’s in 416 at-bats at the Major League level.  Hopefully he will be able to hit better this time around.  We will see.

Eric Young Jr. – OF- Eric Young Jr., like Robinson has bounced around from team to team trying to find a home.  Young is a speedster who is know for being a strong defender but his hitting has been mediocre. He is a career ..246 hitter with a .314 OBP.  he has 145 stolen bases in eight seasons, Young also has hit eight homers and drove in 88 runs in 1,506 career at-bats.

Young’s speed and defense could help the Angels just like Shane Robinson, but overall his hitting needs to improve in order for him to make the club.  However, his experience would also be a plus and the fact that Young Jr. is a switch-hitter may also work in his favor in making the roster.

The Angels have a few potential candidates in the non-roster invitees that could make the team, but only time will tell.
