Top international free-agent Mesa to try out for MLB scouts
MIAMI (AP) — Three Cuban prospects, including top international free-agent Victor Victor Mesa, will try out for major league scouts on Friday at Marlins Park.
Also participating will be Mesa’s brother, Victor Mesa Jr., and pitcher Sandy Gaston. All teams are invited to attend.
The Mesas, both outfielders, were recently declared free agents by Major League Baseball and can be signed by any team.
The 22-year-old Victor Victor Mesa started playing in Cuba’s top league at 16. His 17-year-old brother is a switch-hitter who starred for Cuba’s 18U national team. Both left Cuba last spring to pursue major league careers.
Gaston, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound right-hander, throws in the mid-90s. He started playing for Cuba’s 18U league in 2017 at 15.
