San Francisco Giants Add Four Players To 40-Man Roster

With the Rule 5 Draft coming up on December 8th, the San Francisco Giants had a bit of roster maintenance to take care of. They added four players to their 40-Man Roster to protect them from being taken in this year’s Rule-5 Draft.

The San Francisco Giants lost a gem in Joe Biagini during last season’s Rule-5 Draft. While the Giants needed bullpen help, Biagini was playing a significant role in the Toronto Blue-Jay’s bullpen. In 60 innings, he kept an ERA around three, and struckout 62 while walking 19. The Giants were determined not to lose another potentially valuable prospect like that.

This year, they protected four by adding them to the roster: Orlando Calixte, Chase Johnson, Reyes Moranta, and Dan Slania. Calixte was a top prospect in the Royals organization for a few years and the Giants signed him this week. Chase Johnson is intriguing, as he made a switch to the pen this season after struggling in Richmond as a starter. Moranta is rocketing up the Giants’ ranks, and according to McCovey Chronicles, “is a pitcher who starts in Double-A and ends in the Majors before you’ve heard of him.” Slania is also a solid pitching prospect.
