Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy undergoing treatment for lung cancer

NESN, the television host of the Boston Red Sox, announced that long-time color analyst Jerry Remy will undergo treatment for a relapse of lung cancer.

Remy, the former Red Sox second baseman, is entering his 30th season as their on-air color analyst. The network announced that Remy will continue to cover games this season and doesn’t expect him to miss any time away from work. After undergoing a recent procedure, he won’t be able to fly for four weeks, missing a portion of Spring Training.

Remy also announced his diagnosis on Twitter:

In an interview with SportsCenter 5, Remy told Mike Lynch that the cancer is under control and has not spread to any nodes. At 64 years old, this is his fourth bout with cancer. He was first diagnosed in 2008 and underwent surgery to treat the disease. Most recently, doctors found a cancerous growth on a different spot on his lungs in January of 2013. He was thankful not to miss any time during the ’13 season after undergoing surgery to treat his relapse.

Remy’s present diagnosis comes just weeks after he signed a multi-year extension with NESN to serve as the Red Sox’ primary color analyst. The deal will see him cover 115 games per season. Shortly after the deal was announced, Remy had this to say:

I’m very excited and pleased to be able to continue doing the job that I love, now heading into my 30th year and beyond with NESN… I want to thank NESN and the Red Sox for all their support in the past and going forward.

As a former player and analyst, Remy has been connected to the team for almost 40 years. He spent eight of his eleven major league seasons with the Red Sox, manning second base until a knee injury forced his retirement in 1986. Three years after hanging up his cleats, Remy joined the broadcast team on NESN and has been a staple ever since. He was also elected the first President of Red Sox Nation in 2007 and named a second reserve on the All-Fenway Team.

Remy will also hold a press conference on Monday afternoon to address his health status and promote cancer screening. The interview will air on “NESN Live” at 5:30 pm and “Red Sox From Fort Myers” at 6:00 pm.
