Phils option Mayberry to make room for Victorino
The Phillies optioned John Mayberry to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on
Friday to make room for outfielder Shane Victorino, who was
activated from the disabled list.
Mayberry had started the previous 13 games but is hitting only
.231 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 104 at-bats this season.
Manager Charlie Manuel said the organization wanted to get the
27-year-old former first-round draft pick more playing time to aid
in his development.
The activation of Victorino, who had been out since May 19 with
a right hamstring sprain, had been expected. His return to the
active roster gives the first-place Phillies their top lineup for
the first time this season.
Second baseman Chase Utley (right knee) didn’t play until May
23, and catcher Carlos Ruiz and right fielder Domonic Brown also
have spent time on the disabled list this season.
