Phillies claim Cuban reliever Dalier Hinojosa off waivers

The Philadelphia Phillies will try to actuate Dalier Hinojosa’s potential after the Cuban reliever failed to impress the Boston Red Sox.

According to multiple reports, the Phillies acquired Hinojosa off waivers after the 29-year-old righty was designated for assignment by the Red Sox last week.

After being signed by the Red Sox in 2013, Hinojosa showed potential in the minors, accruing a 3.56 ERA with 104 strikeouts in 103 2/3 innings in Boston’s farm system, but was marred by control issues, walking 50 batters.

The Isla de la Juventud, Cuba native made his major-league debut for the Red Sox this season in a May 3 game against the New York Yankees.

While he produced an inning and two-thirds of scoreless relief and struck out two batters, Hinojosa walked three, and was sent back down the minors shortly after his debut, which stands as his only major-league experience to date.
