It seems the Arizona Diamondbacks are finally starting to play with confidence at home.
They’ll try to extend their season-high winning streak at Chase Field to four games Tuesday night against the San Diego Padres.
Arizona (21-32) averaged 3.3 runs while going 4-18 at home before totaling 30 during its three-game winning streak, with more than half coming in an 18-7 rout of the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 17. A.J. Pollock had three hits Monday, including a walkoff, two-run homer that gave the Diamondbacks a 7-5 victory and sent San Diego to its sixth loss in eight games.
The hosts showed their mettle after blowing two leads and trailing once en route to winning for the third time in four contests.
"You come in here every day and put a lot of swings in the cages and you work hard and it’s really cool when you actually get up there when the team needs you in late innings and be able to win a game," Pollock said.
Pollock went 3 for 24 with seven strikeouts during last week’s 2-4 trip against St. Louis and the New York Mets, but is 11 for 17 with two home runs and four RBIs in the last four at home.
”He’s got all the tools to be a great player and you can see that he’s getting comfortable," teammate Cody Ross said about Pollock, who is batting .400 (12 for 30) versus San Diego (23-29) in nine career home contests.
Wade Miley (3-5, 4.85 ERA) is 1-6 with a 5.09 ERA in 10 starts versus San Diego, but has a 2.08 ERA while going 0-2 in his last four against the NL West foe. That included May 4, when he gave up three runs and six hits in seven innings of a 4-3 loss without a decision.
The left-hander has allowed seven runs over 12 2-3 innings while losing his last two starts overall. Three came in 6 2-3 innings of a 4-2 defeat to the Cardinals on Thursday.
San Diego counters with Eric Stults (2-5, 4.97), who is 0-4 with a 5.18 ERA in five road starts this season but has received runs only once while on the mound during that span – a 4-3 loss at Washington on April 24. He allowed an earned run in 6 2-3 innings of a 3-1 loss at Colorado on May 16 in his most recent road outing.
However, Stults followed that up Thursday by yielding five runs in 4 2-3 innings in a 5-1 home defeat to the Chicago Cubs.
The left-hander is 2-1 with a 2.08 ERA against the Diamondbacks at Petco Park, but 2-3 with a 3.94 ERA as a starter at Chase Field.
Pollock is 3 for 13 versus Stults, but teammate Martin Prado is batting .381 (8 for 21) with two doubles and a triple against him.
San Diego’s Everth Cabrera hit a three-run homer and recorded four of his season’s 10 RBIs on Monday after going 0 for 21 in his previous five against the Diamondbacks. He’s 8 for 17 (.471) with a home run and triple run versus Miley.
