Toronto chose to host the first game against the Tigers on Tuesday. This left Baltimore, in need of one win to gain entry to the wild-card game, with the option of playing one sudden-death game against the winner of Tuesday’s contest at home on Wednesday, or playing twice on the road.
Baltimore elected to take the one chance at home, meaning the Tigers will instead have two chances to win one game on the road.
The two winners will meet in the AL wild-card game on Thursday, which will be played in Toronto if the Blue Jays are in it. Otherwise, it’ll be in Baltimore.
The Orioles have gone 50–31 at home this year, and enter Sunday with a 38–42 record on the road. That was apparently enough to convince them one chance to win a game at home is better than two chances to win a game on the road.
Houston awaits the winner of the AL wild-card game in the American League Division Series on Friday.
