New York Mets farm team puts a creative spin on Prince tribute
Minor league baseball is full of teams hosting interesting promotions in an attempt to fill seats, and a Class A affiliate for the New York Mets scheduled a Prince-themed game in June with some unique ways to honor the late musician.
The Columbia Fireflies will hold a Prince tribute night on June 9 which, according to a release from the team, will feature a pre-game performance from a Prince tribute band, Prince music throughout the game, a pancake eating contest and purple fireworks.
But that’s not all. There will also be fun freebies, such as free parking for anyone driving a little red Corvette and free purple glow necklaces for all fans born in 1999. The Fireflies will also hold a Ping Pong tournament featuring a grand prize of a CD of Prince’s Greatest Hits, and the stadium’s Budweiser Bowtie Bar will sell frozen "Purple Rain" alcoholic beverages.
Like any good minor league promotional game, the Prince tribute night is complete with special outfits for the occasion. Players will wear purple Prince-themed jerseys and staff will rock raspberry berets.

The Fireflies’ connection to Prince goes beyond more than just the average fan. The singer made a contribution to the Columbia community back in 2011 when helped donated $250,000 to a local children’s charity.
