ICYMI Former Los Angeles Angels Pitcher Signs With San Diego

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 7:20 p.m. ET

Former Los Angeles Angels pitcher Jhoulys Chacin signed a one-year deal with the San Diego Padres.

When Jhoulys Chacin arrived to play for the Los Angeles Angels, we all knew his time would be short-lived. Chacin, acquired from the Atlanta Braves in late may, was a rental for the Angels. A rental in a time of desperate need. Still, Chacin provided some decent pitching for the Angels this past season.

The Venezuela native pitched in 29 games with an ERA of 4.68. Chacin wasn’t a sure thing on the mound. However, he thrived in the bullpen versus the starting role. At times, it Chacin was seemingly a utility pitcher. He would start for a week, then he would rejoin the bullpen. This was all due to the variable of injuries that plagued the Angels last season.

Now, Chacin will be joining the Padres who have pitching problems of their own. Deemed the worst rotation in baseball by a variety of experts, the Padres are looking to improve. Chacin’s deal is a one-year, $1.75 million deal. He will have a great chance to make the starting roster. Last season, the Padres dealt their ace pitcher Andrew Cashner to the Miami Marlins in what was a seven-player deal.

Chacin is the first notable signing to come from within the Angels free agents. The Angels still haven’t seen any traction from Jered Weaver, C.J. Wilson, or Tim Lincecum.

The latest reports were that Wilson was drawing significant interest from the Miami Marlins. While a deal is far from finalized, Wilson seems to be the only pitcher of the three getting feelers from around the MLB.

The notion that Wilson, Weaver or Lincecum could return to the Angels rotation is highly unlikely. Wilson is definitely not coming back to Anaheim. Weaver is an unlikely possibility, and even if he does return, it will be a limited role. Lincecum is likely to finish his career in Triple-A. As much as Angel fans wanted to see Lincecum dazzle the MLB with a comeback, it just didn’t happen.

While Chacin’s time in Anaheim was short-lived. He still provided wins and decent pitching in a season that was over before June. I wish him the best of luck in San Diego. He’ll need it.
