Giants’ Casilla pitches ‘immaculate’ inning
Santiago Casilla needed only nine pitches to record a save on Sunday in the Giants’ win over the Reds. Each of those nine pitches were strikes, and they led to strikeouts of three consecutive batters. The act of three strikeouts on three pitches each constitutes an “immaculate” inning. It’s a rare feat, but not as rare as accomplishments like perfect games or four-homer games. MLB.com cites 79 previous occurrences of this feat, according to Baseball Almanac.
According to Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News, Casilla didn’t even realize what he had done:
“Oho! Oh, wow!” said Casilla, who wasn’t counting his pitches as he struck out Marlon Byrd, Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce. “That’s a surprise. Oh my God. I’d like to do it every time.”
