Ex-Yankee Rusty Torres pleads not guilty
A former major league outfielder has pleaded not guilty to charges he sexually abused an 8-year-old while working as a baseball coach for a town on New York’s Long Island.
Rosendo ”Rusty” Torres of Massapequa is charged with four misdemeanor counts of sexual abuse. Bail at his Wednesday arraignment was set at $50,000.
Prosecutors say the 63-year-old is employed by the town of Oyster Bay, where he has run baseball clinics at various locations.
The incidents allegedly happened on April 30 and on Monday in a town-owned van. Town officials say Torres is suspended without pay.
Torres played for five major league teams from 1971-1980, including the Yankees. He had a .212 lifetime batting average.
Attorney Scott Carrigan says Torres has a great reputation in the community. He says the allegations came as a shock.
