The Tigers then broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth, sending nine men to the plate. J.D. Martinez doubled, Justin Upton singled him home, and Saltalamacchia doubled to lead off the inning. JaCoby Jones then doubled for his first Major League hit. Kinsler then singled home two to give the Tigers the 6-3 lead.
The White Sox got one run back in the top of the seventh. Adam Eaton doubled and Tim Anderson singled to trim the Tigers lead to 6-4.
Instead of sitting on the lead, the Tigers added insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh. J.D. Martinez blasted a home run to left field to lead off the inning. Justin Upton then reached on an error which put him at second base. He moved to third on a Saltalamacchia ground ball. Jones then came up with his second hit to bring home Upton.
The Tigers and White Sox will complete their series Wednesday afternoon at 1:10 in a marquee pitching matchup. Justin Verlander will take the mound for the Tigers as they go for the sweep. He will be opposed by Chris Sale who will be looking for his 16th win of the season.
