David Ortiz Has Conspiracy Theory About PED Test

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 10:24 p.m. ET

Remember when it was leaked that David Ortiz failed a PED test? Well, the former Red Sox slugger has not forgotten. Now, he has a theory on what happened.

Who doesn't love a good conspiracy theory? From aliens walking among us, to the NBA draft being rigged in favor of the Knicks so they could draft Patrick Ewing, conspiracy theories are everywhere. As it turns out, these theories are not just the realm of people wearing tin foil hats or Michael Moore, as David Ortiz subscribes to a conspiracy theory as well.

Let us head back to 2003. That season, MLB decided to test players for PEDs as a test of their own. If more than 5% of the players tested positive, in tests that the players were notified of, then actual PED testing would take place. Of course, the results were supposed to be anonymous, but as with anything else, these players were outed over time.

Ortiz had his turn to be outed for his failed test in 2009. At the time, Ortiz vowed to find out what he tested positive for, but as his popularity refused to wane in Boston and around the game. So, that positive test was essentially forgotten about, as Ortiz slugged homers and continued to be the warm, gregarious Papi.

However, while most of the baseball world forgot about that positive test, Ortiz did not. He came out with his own theory as to why his test results came out. And, in a fun way, it helps to further the rivalry with the New York Yankees.

Back then, several Yankees players were being outed for their failed tests during that initial sample. Naturally, it would make sense that New York would want to damage Ortiz' reputation. And, if they could get into his head, and possibly keep him from being the feared slugger that he had been for a few games, it could make a difference in any potential pennant race.

It is certainly an interesting theory. Unfortunately, that is all it is. Unless some anonymous source within the Yankees is feeling disgruntled and confirms Ortiz' accusations, his thoughts will simply remain a theory. However, it may help to reignite that dormant rivalry with the Yankees. Or, bring back those thoughts of the Evil Empire, and wonder whether or not they have a propaganda department that would make North Korea envious.

David Ortiz feels that there is a conspiracy that led to his failed PED test becoming public, and is pointing the finger at the Yankees. Someone get him a tin foil hat and an underground bunker.
